Spring Cleaning Tips to Boost Productivity in the Workplace

Freshen Up Your Workspace With Spring Cleaning Tips

Whether you’re currently working from home or still going into the office, it is important to make sure your work environment is clean and well-organized, allowing you to work efficiently. Spring cleaning does not need to be completed in one day. Designate a time each week to accomplish a certain task. You want to make sure you are doing a thorough job, so it is important not to rush the process. Some areas we recommend focusing on are your desk, digital desktop, as well as shared office spaces. Learn some helpful tips below!

Desk

It is likely that you spend a decent amount of time at your desk each week. A cluttered desk can cause great stress and affect your productivity. It may be overwhelmed with stacks of paper, scattered pens, empty coffee cups; the list goes on. The state of your desk may impact your ability to complete your responsibilities, resulting in negative consequences. Improve your work environment by cleaning up your desk space! To begin the desk cleaning/organizing process, we recommend removing everything from your desk, including items that may be inside of drawers. Go through everything and decide what can be kept and properly discarded. Once that is done, it is important to disinfect the top and inside of your desk. We highly recommend investing in storage containers and file folders. These can help you keep important documents and materials organized where they can be easily found. If you use a laptop or desktop keyboard, you can remove dust and other debris with a compressed air duster.

Digital Clutter

Don’t forget about digital clutter! When we become busy with work, we often are left with an inbox of unread emails or spam, desktops filled with various documents, screenshots, and unlabeled folders, or browsers with too many tabs to count. We recommend labeling folders by year or category so you can keep track of important information. When looking at your email inbox, make a folder for any significant emails you want to keep and delete those that you no longer need. When you are done with a tab, close out of it and only bookmark necessary tabs.

Shared Spaces

Many employers offer their employees a kitchen area where they have access to snacks, coffee, and various appliances including a refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker. Who is responsible for making sure this shared space is clean? That’s right, you! After using a dish, you should clean it and put it away properly, or place it in the dishwasher if possible. Make sure to throw any food away that you may have forgotten to eat. There’s nothing worse than a foul-odor coming from the refrigerator. Countertops should be cleaned as well as the inside of the fridge, as things can spill and become sticky, attracting unwanted insects.
