How to Keep The New Years Resolutions for Your Office

New Year’s Day, a time to start over. A day where you can forget mistakes made in the previous year and make goals to have a better year ahead. This is a time when you try to start over with a clean slate. During this time, we often hear that people want to lose all of the weight that they have gained over the holidays, or they really want to change their lifestyle to become healthier.

Unfortunately, this is often easier said than done. Everyone knows that gyms are filled throughout January, but halfway through February people often begin to give up. When you are used to living your life in a certain way, it can be very difficult to make big changes.

One of the best things that you can do to keep resolutions is to not do it alone. We recommend that offices participate in resolutions together to create a healthier office. Here are some ideas that you should consider for your office.

Start A Wellness Program

Talk to the HR department about beginning a wellness program in your office. Think about having a wellness coach do an initial health and wellness consultation and stress mapping. Once a month or once every other month, have a wellness coach come in to your office and discuss nutrition with your employees. Also, consider hiring a personal trainer to do a thirty-minute fitness class during your office’s lunch hour or right after work once or twice a week.

Have a Health Incentive Program

This should not be a “weight loss competition”. When people try to quickly lose weight they often do so in an unhealthy manner and often gain weight after the competition is over. We recommend incentives where employees are working towards their own individual goal to earn a reward instead of competing with other employees. Sometimes competition can be fun in the office, but not in programs like these. Discuss an incentive program with a wellness coach so that you understand what kinds of incentive programs have the most success.

Create an Office Sports Team

Many different offices have softball, kickball, or other kinds of sports teams. Most communities have many different adult sports or corporate sports leagues that you should research in your area. The benefits of office sports teams go beyond simply health purposes. Sports teams can create strong employee relationships so that people are happier at work. Also, games can also be used for networking. Your team will be playing with other teams from different companies and your employees could be playing with companies that your business may be interested in working with.

Give Together

If your office wishes to be charitable, consider having your office compete in a walk or run together. Your employees can fundraise and you can match their donations to a charity of your choice. Your company will have fun preparing and fundraising together, while they are improving their fitness. This is an office competition that we WOULD recommend.

We want to wish your company a very happy and healthy New Year. We hope that these tips have been helpful to make sure that your office keeps all of its New Years resolutions. We also hope that new, healthier habits are made.
